Mr. Chuck Shriner
AP, IB, MYP Tutor | Sports Science Coach
Humanities & Performance Specialist
Chuck is an accomplished international educator and consultant with over 30 years of experience teaching, coaching, and mentoring high-achieving students in Singapore and abroad. He brings deep expertise across AP, IB, and MYP programs, along with a rare blend of academic rigor, leadership development, and performance psychology.
Chuck holds degrees in Sociology and Sports Science, along with graduate studies in Sports Science and Educational Psychology. He has spent the majority of his career in international schools, where he built a reputation for developing both high-performing students and high-character individuals.
Chuck has extensive experience supporting students in English, History, Psychology, and Humanities subjects, and understands the importance of designing a differentiated curriculum for neurodiverse and neurotypical learners. He also guides students in analytical writing, research skills, exam readiness, IB Internal Assessments (IAs), Extended Essays (EEs), and AP-style essays, with a focus on helping students strengthen critical thinking, argumentation, and academic confidence.
In addition to his classroom work, Chuck is a highly rated one-to-one tutor, supporting students in AP U.S. History, Comparative Government, English Language & Composition, Literature, and Human Geography. In the IB curriculum, Chuck can teach English Language B (SL and HL), History, Geography, Global Politics, Psychology, Anthropology and World Religions (SL). Students value his ability to break complex ideas into structured, manageable steps while elevating writing clarity, depth of analysis, and exam performance.
Chuck previously served for nearly two decades at Singapore American School as a Department Chair, Varsity Coach, and curriculum leader. He also spearheaded the creation of a university-credit AT Kinesiology course, a program that continues to serve students today. His leadership roles have included mentoring student boards, collaborating with school administration, and guiding large-scale educational initiatives from concept to completion.
Beyond education, Chuck has worked as a professional sports commentator and analyst for over 25 years, including coverage with ESPN Asia and other regional networks. His experience analyzing high-level competition, from preparation and strategy to in-game decision-making under pressure, informs the way he coaches students, particularly student-athletes striving to perform at their best both academically and competitively.
Chuck’s approach is grounded in what he describes as purpose-driven empowerment. He believes that students thrive when clear goals, structured processes, and strong mentorship come together, transforming uncertainty into direction and potential into performance. His work with students deeply integrates Champion’s core philosophy, using executive functioning systems such as planning, prioritization, metacognitive reflection, and study strategy development, helping learners become independent, self-aware, and resilient.
At Champion, Chuck supports learners across a wide range of profiles, from high-achieving students aiming for top IB and AP results to multilingual and neurodiverse learners building confidence in writing and structured thinking. He meets each student where they are, bringing both high expectations and empathetic guidance to help them grow in competence, confidence, and self-belief.
Outside of his professional work, Chuck is a lifelong sports and fitness enthusiast, a former competitive runner and coach, and an avid follower of basketball, baseball, and soccer. He is also a musician who has played bass guitar and harmonica in bands in both the U.S. and Singapore. Above all, he is a proud husband, father, and grandfather who values time with family and believes deeply in the role parents play in shaping a child’s journey.
